Warden Message # 2/2009:  Demonstrations Expected Friday, January 9 in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ras al Khaima

January 9, 2009

The U.S. Mission to the United Arab Emirates has learned that demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people are expected to take place on the afternoon of Friday, January 9 in Abu Dhabi, Duabi, Sharjah and Ras al Khaima. The demonstrations are expected to take place in Abu Dhabi on the Corniche near the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Building, in Dubai near the Dubai Courts in the AlKhor Garden area, in Sharjah near the Khaled Lake; and in Ras al Khaimah at the Almanar Mall. The demonstrations are scheduled to begin on Friday, January 9 between 3 and 4 p.m. U.S. Mission personnel have been instructed to avoid these areas on the afternoon of January 9. American citizens are urged to remain alert to the possibility of other demonstrations throughout the UAE.

We remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. American citizens should stay current with media coverage of local and regional events and be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Americans traveling abroad should regularly monitor the U.S. Embassy's website <http://abudhabi.usembassy.gov/> and the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs' website <http://travel.state.gov/>, where the current Worldwide Caution, Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and Country Specific Information can be found.
