Professional Development Workshops for Teachers and School Administrators
Thirty-four teachers and thirty-four school administrators from the Northern Emirates had the opportunity to develop their teaching and leadership skills in a series of workshops organized by the Institute for International Education (IIE) and sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi, March 15-19, 2009.
The three-day workshop on Professional Development for Teachers and the two-day workshop on Principled Leadership Seminar for School Administrators were held at Jamilaa Bu Hayred High School for Girls in Fujairah. The teachers' workshop discussed Student-Centered Learning in the Classroom, Rubric Assessment and Critical Thinking in the Classroom. Teachers from different schools shared their classroom experiences, discussed ways to apply the workshop’s lessons to their own work, and explored new ways to address the learning needs of their students. They also explored ideas for sharing knowledge with other teachers and for encouraging students to share knowledge with each other, and participated in different activities designed to foster more engaging classrooms, with the ultimate goal of increasing student learning and performance. The School Administrator Workshop focused on developing new organizational structures, creating shared visions and building effective teams.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is an independent nonprofit founded in 1919. IIE is among the world’s largest and most experienced international education and training organizations.
