The Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) (http://mepi.state.gov) is a presidential initiative to support reform programs that promote political, economic, and educational reform in the Middle East and North Africa -- especially for women and youth.
MEPI is the United States' principal mechanism for supporting reform efforts in the region, and builds on the G-8 countries' Broader Middle East and North Africa Initiative (BMENA).
Ideas for effective reform are solicited from within the region, and partnerships with locally based institutions and individuals are central to all endeavors.
Since its creation in late 2002, the U.S. government has devoted more than $218 mil. to MEPI.
The Abu Dhabi Middle East Partnership Initiative Regional Office opened in August 2004. The office is one of two regional offices, the other located in Tunis, created to solicit input from the region, and to facilitate better coordination of ideas and programs designed to further MEPI goals.
