Embassy Hosts Voting Workshop for 2008 Elections

On June 8, the U.S. Embassy hosted a voting assistance workshop to train local American volunteers in the American absentee voting process.  These participants, in turn, will reach out to Americans in their local groups or organizations around the UAE and help them register to vote in the 2008 U.S. elections.

To All American citizens in the UAE:

As we enter the busy summer travel and holiday season, including plans for 4th of July celebrations around the UAE, Embassy Abu Dhabi and Consulate General Dubai wish to remind American citizens about the general security situation in the Middle East, as outlined below in the current Worldwide Caution. The Embassy and Consulate General wish to advise Americans that potential exists for terrorists to plan and carry out violent actions in the region, including the UAE, and for this reason Americans should maintain a high level of personal security awareness at all times, particularly in public places

Release of the 2008 Report on Trafficking in Persons

June 4, 2008

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of State released its eighth annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report today.  The 2008 Trafficking in Persons Report on 170 countries is the most comprehensive worldwide report on the efforts of governments to combat severe forms of trafficking in persons.

The annual Trafficking in Persons Report serves as the primary diplomatic tool through which the U.S. Government encourages partnership and increased determination in the fight against forced labor, sexual exploitation, and modern-day slavery.

At the release of the report, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice remarked, "Today, because of our efforts, the efforts of our allies, and reports like the one we are releasing today, there is much greater global awareness about the brutality of human trafficking."

U.S. signs Memorandum of Cooperation with UAE Ministry of Education 
May 18, 2008 - United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings visited the UAE May 16-21 to explore new avenues for partnership in education between the U.S. and the UAE.  During her visits, she focused on innovative and useful ways in which the U.S. may assist the UAE in enhancing their strategies for educational reform and development. Spellings, expressing the hope that a deeper partnership would build bridges and reduce misunderstanding between the U.S. and the Arab world, said, "we are excited to work together on these important areas of mutual interest to both of us."

President Bush Attends World Economic Forum

May 18, 2008. President George W. Bush spoke at the third meeting of the World Economic Forum on the Middle East in Sharm al Sheikh, Egypt on Sunday, May 18th, 2008 and highlighted the U.S. emphasis on deeper democratic reforms in the region.

Mr. Bush said, "America appreciates the challenges facing the Middle East. Yet the light of liberty is beginning to shine." (complete text)
